March 2013 – Case Of The Month

Kovu

Clinical Condition

Road traffic accident resulting in non-displaced fracture of pubis on left hand side plus facial injuries.

Clinical History

‘Kovu’ was referred to Hawksmoor following a road traffic accident that resulted in a non-displaced fracture of the left side of the pubis, facial injuries and a paresis (weakness) of the right side of the body. On assessment ‘Kovu’ was bright and alert but very unsteady on his hind limbs, especially the right hind, preferring to use walls to walk along to steady himself. His vision in his right eye was also impaired and was glazed in its appearance.

September 2012 – Case Of The Month

Clinical Condition

Bilateral (both) Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture

Vital Stats

Name: Toby Age: 12 Years Old Breed: Terrier Cross

Clinical History

Toby suffered this unfortunate accident whilst on holiday with his owners. Like most dogs Toby was running around on the beach when he suddenly stopped and was unable to bear weight on both of his hind legs. His owners took him to the nearest veterinary practice where radiographs of both his hind legs were performed diagnosing bilateral cruciate rupture.

Tulla

Clinical Condition

Severe bilateral hip dysplasia & left cranial cruciate ligament rupture and repair

Clinical History

Tulla was presented to the Veterinary Surgery with a history of intermittent lameness of the left hind. No particular traumatic event was noted and hip dysplasia was thought not to be the primary cause of the lameness.

Betty

Clinical Condition

Elbow Dysplasia

Clinical History

Betty’s rehabilitation programme commenced on 11 August 2006 following a spinal injury at T12 and T13. She had a dorsal laminectomy performed on 28 July 2006 and shortly afterwards developed paraplegia in both hind limbs.

Scarlet

Clinical Condition

Elbow Dysplasia

Clinical History

Scarlet was presented to the Veterinary Surgery with lameness of the left fore for approximately 6 weeks.

Jessika

Clinical Condition

Bilateral Hip Dysplasia

Clinical History

Jessika had a history of intermittent lameness on the right hind limb, particularly post exercise. She was also reported to be suffering from some stiffness in the hind quarters after rising from rest and on the “sit” command when training.

Jazmin

Clinical Condition

Bilateral Elbow Dysplasia

Clinical History

Jazmin was initially presented to the Veterinary Surgeon with a 3 week history of intermittent lameness, particularly to the left for limb.

Herbi

Clinical Condition

Crepitus (grinding of bones) in the left shoulder caused by a bony spur on vertebra C7

Clinical History

Herbi was presented to the Veterinary Surgery with a history of intermittent pain in the shoulder region of his neck. No lameness had been noted. Radiographs were performed as the Veterinary Surgeon could palpate some crepitus between Herbi’s shoulder blades.

Grace

Clinical Condition

Panosteitis as a puppy

Clinical History

Grace was presented to the Veterinary Surgery at 5 months of age with a history of non specific lameness. Panosteitis (inflammation of the bone) was suspected because Grace was suffering from shifting lameness and being a large breed was prone to this condition.

Flash

Clinical Condition

Spinal Arthritis (Between lumbar vertebrae 5 and 6)

Clinical History

Flash was presented to the Veterinary Surgeon with moderate pain in the lumbar (lower) region of his spine. He was therefore hospitalised so radiographs of his spinal column could be performed.
